Cleanliness: the advice of Emmanuelle Rigon, psychologist ...:

Why are parents so eager to see their toddlers peeing in the pot?

  • Certain material reasons can, of course, explain this impatience, such as the price of diapers or the proximity of back to school. But, most often, the parents themselves are under a lot of pressure! More or less consciously, we continue to think that an early child has been well raised: it reflects the image of "good" parents, competent educators. In this area, there may even be a competition between parents: mine was clean before yours!
  • Finally, the use of words is not trivial: in our society, a child who is not clean is dirty, so considered very negatively; the one who pee in his pants has "accidents", rather dramatic term ...

Can we really speed up the acquisition of cleanliness?

  • It can be successful to condition a child by putting it, for example, on the pot every two hours or after each meal. At this rate, he is sure he will pee in the pot! But in reality, it will have acquired nothing in depth, nothing seized of the process that leads to real cleanliness. For a child to become clean, several conditions must be met: that he feels in his body the need to urinate, that he is old enough to ask to go on the pot and that he accepts idea to go on the pot.
  • The conditioning makes him "grill" all these steps! Not only does he not have the time to internalize his need to pee, he does not go through the box "I feel like I want to pee". So, he may confuse it with other things that have nothing to do with the excitement of the game, anger, nervousness ... and to pee in his pants for a long time without really understanding what happens to him! And, above all, he decides nothing, he just submits.
